Body Cam Video Shows Mercer County Police Officer Saving Caged Dog During Brutal Blaze

The 90 seconds it took for a Mercer County police officer to climb into a burning home and save a frightened dog were captured in the officer’s action-packed body camera footage.

The fire broke out at 109 Browning Ave. in Ewing around 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 2, DailyVoice.com reported.

Nearby police officers immediately responded to the blaze, one of them including Det. Julia Caldwell, who didn’t hesitate to climb through a window and brave the smoky conditions upon discovering that a dog was still trapped inside.

Body camera footage uploaded to YouTube by Caldwell’s husband, retired Ewing officer Jeff Caldwell, shows the detective grabbing the German Shepherd from its cage before wrapping it in a towel and bringing it to safety as other officers helped lower her back outside, according to NJ.com.

Caldwell was hospitalized for smoke inhalation following the canine’s rescue, authorities said, and according to the report, she was briefly put into a medically-induced coma before her release.
